DESCRIPTION:
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, which was crowned under the name of Victoria Terminus Station, in Mumbai, is an reknowned example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture in India, converged with traditonal themes originating from Indian traditional architecture. The building, was designed by the Victorian British architect F. W. Stevens, the Terminus soon became the symbol of Bombay as the ‘Gothic City’ and the major international railway port of India. The terminal was built over a staggering 10 years, construction commenced in 1878, according to a High Victorian Gothic design based on late medieval Italian models. Its remarkable stone dome, turrets, pointed arches and eccentric ground plan were quite in relatio to traditional Indian palace architecture. It is an outstanding example of the meeting of two very deep and diverse cultures, as British architects worked along Indian craftsmen to include Indian architectural tradition and idioms thus forging a new style unique to Bombay. Ultimately this collaboration resulted in the creation of an engineering Marvel!
